It isn't Shakespeare's story at all. It's probably based on an earlier play by the same name (the author is unknown. Some say Kyd, some say Shakespeare) which is loosely based on Danish history. He can't have been the first one to use it, and I'm sure there were contemporaneous storytellers telling stories very similar in the basics. In fact, I'd challenge anyone to look at any piece of work and find an earlier work that doesn't match up pretty closely. There are story tropes and conventions that just...work, sometimes.
